Earselect Unpacks: How Romantasy and #BookTok Are Reshaping The Industry

Top audiobooks across Northern Europe used to share a very clear recipe. If you looked at streaming charts a few years ago, the formula for a hit was a troubled detective, a bleak Scandinavian landscape, and a race against time. Crime thrillers were the undisputed heavyweights of the audiobook world.
Then came #BookTok. Even though the immediate impact could be seen more on a global scale, the evidence of a reshaped landscape could soon be found even in Europe.
What started as a subculture on social media quickly grew into a massive economic driver for modern publishing. Today, audio charts tell a somewhat different story. A younger demographic of listeners is changing consumption habits, pushing genres like romantasy and trope-driven romance straight into the mainstream top ten.
Fantasy Meets Emotion
Traditional fantasy in audio format has always required a substantial commitment from the listener. Heavy world-building, intricate lore, and lengthy setups can make for a dense listening experience. Romantasy turns that dynamic around by placing character relationships, emotional stakes, and familiar tropes at the center of the story.
When you lean into dynamics like enemies-to-lovers or forced proximity, the narrative keeps its momentum without getting bogged down in endless exposition. The result is immersive, high-stakes storytelling built around a relatable emotional core, which happens to work exceptionally well in headphones.
Ebba Bengtsson, Book Creator & Co-host of the Bokbikten Podcast, highlights how this emotional connection serves as a gateway for listeners:
“I definitely believe that romance has become an entry point into fantasy for many readers. Even in a completely foreign and fictional world, emotions like attraction, longing, and betrayal are universal, creating an instant sense of relatability.”
In her view, adding romance enriches the subgenre rather than simplifying it:
“For me, it’s not about making fantasy less complex, but about adding another layer to the world-building, politics, and magic systems. It creates a different depth in the characters—and once you care about them, you also want to understand the world they inhabit. That is precisely why I think romantasy has gained so many new readers. It becomes love that burns and is challenged by the most complex circumstances.”
The Audio Appeal of #BookTok
Much of the viral content on #BookTok relies on raw, emotional reactions to key moments in a book. Readers share unfiltered clips reacting to plot twists, dramatic reveals, or intense dialogue. Once a scene goes viral online, young readers want to experience that story in the most vivid way possible.
Amanda Nystedt, Book Creator & Co-host of the Bokbikten Podcast, points to this community-driven emotional resonance as the true driver behind book recommendations:
“What convinces me on #BookTok is rarely the plot itself, but the feeling other readers convey. When multiple people say a book made them cry, left them completely obsessed, or stayed with them months later, that often says more than a traditional blurb. It can make me pick up a book I otherwise never would have chosen.”
Audiobooks fit naturally into this cycle. A strong narrator elevates the tension between two characters, turning written dialogue into a full drama. Dual-narration and multicast productions, where separate actors voice alternating perspectives, have seen a surge in popularity for this reason. Listeners treat these productions much like podcasts or music, letting the storytelling seamlessly accompany their daily routines.
However, as Nystedt highlights, the choice of performance is a high-stakes decision that can make or break the listener’s experience:
“Then there’s the audio. The right voices and chemistry, especially with dual-narration, can elevate the characters so much that I choose to listen instead of read. But it works both ways—if a voice feels wrong for a character, I might turn it off after 10 minutes.”
The Art of Escapism: Why It Resonates
Beyond the algorithm and sound design, the heart of romantasy’s surge comes down to one fundamental element: pure escapism.

Audio Production Manager
“I think romantasy is a great entry point because it’s entertaining first and foremost”, explains Sóla Þorsteinsdóttir, Audio Production Manager at Earselect. “It doesn't try to be overly literary. The plot is engaging, you have the world-building which, combined with the fantasy angle, gives readers a genuine escape from reality. Female readers find it refreshing to dive into stories about strong female characters on high-stakes adventures, paired with men who would do anything for them. It embraces cliches, but in a way that is fun and easily digestible.”
It’s a sentiment shared across the industry, highlighting a shift in how readers relate to character dynamics – especially for readers transitioning from classic fantasy.

Production Coordinator
“At its core, it's about escapism,” adds Blanca Busquets, Production Coordinator at Earselect. “A big part of the appeal is reading men written by women. It changes the dynamic entirely, usually meaning the female character won't just end up acting as a babysitter or therapist for the male lead. Coming from classic fantasy, it’s validating to finally have more female protagonists with rich inner monologues, clear desires, fears, and agency, rather than just serving as a plot device for the male hero.”
Whether a listener enters the genre as a lifelong fantasy fan looking for nuanced character depth or as a newcomer introduced through social media, the core draw remains the same: immersive worlds, clear emotional stakes, and a welcome break from everyday life.
What This Means for Audio Production
Producing trope-driven fiction requires a slightly different approach than traditional formats. In a standard crime novel, a single, steady voice often holds the entire narrative together. Romantasy depends heavily on chemistry, contrast, and voice performance. Getting the right cast to match the characters directly impacts how well a title resonates with its audience.
Direction and pacing play a huge part as well. Tropes rely on emotional tension, so the narrator needs to honor that rhythm, letting the slow burns build naturally while landing the dramatic peaks with precision. Social media trends move quickly, so bringing these productions to market efficiently is also crucial for capturing interest while demand is highest.
David Tapojärvi, Production Manager for Earselect in the Nordics, acknowledges a shift in the types of production orders coming through and how specific publisher requests have evolved over time.

“Today, we see a lot more multicast titles with anywhere from two up to six or eight voices, sometimes even more”, David explains.
Scaling up to that level requires thorough preparation long before anyone steps into a booth. Managing a cast of up to ten narrators for a single project transforms the production from a standard recording into something closer to a full-scale orchestral operation.
“When you’re coordinating ten different actors, casting and scheduling are only the first hurdles”, says David. “Preparation is everything. We create comprehensive pronunciation guides to ensure total consistency across every perspective.”
From a studio standpoint, overseeing complex multi-cast setups demands tight coordination between narrators, engineers, and production coordinators.
“It puts higher demands on our infrastructure and oversight”, David adds. “Because we record across multiple booths and often connect engineers remotely, everyone needs to be operating off the exact same blueprint. Our job is to handle that backstage complexity seamlessly so the narrators can focus on performance.”
Looking Ahead
Crime fiction and thrillers remain a cornerstone of European audio listening, but the rapid growth of romantasy shows that the audience is expanding. Listeners are looking for variety, fresh voices, and emotionally charged stories. Paying attention to these shifts is not about chasing short-lived social media trends, but rather adapting to a new generation of listeners who are actively reshaping the industry.
